YPDG Blog: July

Hi, welcome to our blog. We are the Young people’s Development Group (YPDG). We are young people who have come together to help create Horizon Youth Zone in Grimsby. This blog is to keep a log of our progress and achievements as we continue to work towards the opening of Horizon Youth Zone and the many opportunities that it will bring.

Welcome back! July was an exciting month with 2 key events taking place: one was our sponsored walk – walking through all the wards in northeast Lincolnshire and another to Scotland with British Exploring Society.

At the start of the month, we did our sponsored walk. We were very lucky with the weather, with there only being 1 rain shower the whole time that we were walking. In around 5 hours we walked approximately 12.5 miles. When we saw Cleethorpes beach, we were all very relieved that we had nearly finished. It was a big challenge to walk this far so we all had to encourage each other, and we finished with fish and chips along the sea front.

In our first meeting of the month, we were joined by Simon from our fundraising team. We continued to work on our heritage fund application. This involved thinking of ideas of how we would share Grimsby’s heritage such as doing a tour of Grimsby, involving famous people from Grimsby and putting a time capsule in Horizon youth zone.

In other sessions, we helped the members of our group who were going to see Ørsted’s new vessel (the Wind of Hope) prepare for their trip. As a group, we don’t just focus on the youth zone, we also incorporate other topics into our meetings. An example of this would be that in one of our meetings, we reflected on last year – our mistakes, what we’re proud of and our favourite memories. Then we moved on to looking at 2021 and what our goals were for the year and what we can do to stay kind this year.

On the 26th, 3 members of the YPDG and Mark travelled to Scotland to begin their 2-week expedition with British Exploring Society.

We hope you enjoyed reading about what we have been up to in July, come back soon to see what we have been doing in August.
