Located in the heart of Grimsby on Garth Lane, opposite Freshney Place, Horizon Youth Zone is set to become a vibrant hub for young people across North East Lincolnshire. Housed within the beautifully restored and repurposed Grade II listed West Haven Maltings and Migar House, the building has been transformed to preserve the town’s heritage while creating a modern, accessible space.
Lucy Ottewell-Key, CEO of Horizon Youth Zone, said: “We’re thrilled to be announcing our opening date which marks the next chapter of our exciting story. During the past months we’ve welcomed children and young people from across the area for taster sessions and their feedback has been incredible. The whole team are so excited to be opening our doors fully and seeing the impact it will have on children and young people across North East Lincolnshire.
We’re incredibly grateful to North East Lincolnshire Council, our Capital Funders including National Lottery Heritage Fund and Youth Investment Fund, OnSide, our amazing family of Cornerstone and Founder Patrons, and our board of trustees who have made this all possible.”
A Grand Opening Day is being held at Horizon Youth Zone on Saturday 14th February, 10am – 3pm. This community event is free for all to attend (children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult) and will be a day packed with fun for all the family, giving young people and families the chance to explore the building, try activities and meet the youth workers who will supporting them.
Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Philip Jackson, said: “For many years now, this council has led a charge for positive change. Driven by a need to re-invent large parts of our borough and raise aspirations amongst those who live and work here, we have united with partners to plan lasting transformation.
“With millions of pounds in Government grants secured, and vital relationships nurtured and developed, schemes were drawn up to dramatically improve Grimsby Town Centre, and I am delighted to say that this council’s support for the new OnSide Horizon Youth Zone is one such scheme.
“We should all be tremendously proud of what has been achieved here – this former derelict Grade II listed West Haven Maltings now looks fantastic and houses this inspirational development, which will benefit so many young people – our adults of tomorrow.
“Developments such as this new Youth Zone are an ideal example of how we are working towards creating a ‘stronger’ economy and ‘stronger communities’ across North East Lincolnshire – and this will continue as we work with others to create an environment that encourages and supports positive community change.”
