Young People’s Development Group Blog: April

Hello all, and welcome back to our Young People’s Development Group (YPDG) blog.

I am your writer this month, William, and this month in the YPDG has been our busiest month so far. So instead of talking let me tell you how much we have done!

To start off this busy April, we were writing interview questions for the Volunteering Coordinator. We used old questions, rewording them to create questions that were similar, but also unique to each person. In this session we also created a pen portrait of a youth worker, with what we wanted in them as a person, but also as a professional.

With the next session we went on a trip to Alton Towers, which was overall a busy day full of screams, shouting and a lot of waiting. The day was exciting – the Smiler, Oblivion and Nemesis are just some of the many amazing rides we went on. We had the chance to go on every ride we wanted to, even with all the long queues waiting to get on them. Overall, the day was brilliant and exhausting – especially when we got back to the van! We did karaoke on the way there and back.

For our third session, we had our biggest event yet, going to Myton Foods and doing a lot of different things that we thought we would never do.

The first thing we did was get a safety talk before going into the factory itself. Then we learned the process of how each different fish is made, from being frozen to being seasoned and cooked. Each one smelled different – and over-powering in some areas!

After the tour of the factory, we got to do our presentation on Horizon to Steve and Dez, who really enjoyed it. They even sent an email saying how glad they are that we enjoyed our tour and were engaged, with lots of questions being asked.

Near the end of Myton, we did a taste testing of different fish. Each one was cooked and seasoned to make different dishes. At the end of our visit, Steve showed us how to fillet a fish fast and clean. Just before we left, we got tasked with making a food product to help spread the word about Horizon.

For our last session, we interviewed candidates for the Volunteering Coordinator position. Alexis took charge, being head of the table, making sure we had all written down what we needed and telling us when to ask our question. We all enjoyed their company and they answered each question relevantly and on point, which is what we want!

It’s been a very busy month but we will keep you all updated in May!

And keep an eye on the shelf, just in case you see our product there…
